T&I Letter Urges Transportation Funding Guarantees

February 2007 (SmartPros) — Highway and transit programs are slated to receive a $4 billion budget boost in 2007. However, the full-year budget is frozen at last year's levels until legistators approve a final continuing resolution.

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee last month regarding funding for surface transportation programs under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).

The letter states, "The FY 2007 SAFETEA-LU funding level reflects the bipartisan agreement reached in 2005 after a long and difficult effort to reauthorize surface transportation programs in a way that would begin to meet our nation's transportation infrastructure needs, and address the equity concerns among States."

The letter continues: "If the current CR is not adjusted, SAFETEA-LU infrastructure investment programs will be cut by $4 billion, including $3.532 billion from highways, $480 million from transit, and $30 million from motor carrier safety programs."

The letter secured 75 signatures.

House and Senate leaders have indicated they will seek a long-term continuing resolution to fund government programs for the balance of the year, with a vote on that resolution expected this month, according to the American Council of Civil Engineers.
